Down the Hatch

There’s a new young thang that’s amping up the funk with a fresh and varied deck of brands in the Okanagan Valley’s wine scene in the Pacific northwest.

The Hatch winery has brought fresh ideas to what isn’t by any means a stale game as there are already some killa cool brands in the region, Moon Curser and Bonamici just to name a couple.

But when you come face to face with the variety of design from tall tales to dinosaur-hauling birds to the cyclops of childhood imagination, it’s a fun ride in the tasting room.

The Gobsmacked white blend was a highlight, a lively and crisp wine with bang for the buck. A blend of about a half a dozen varieties from Roussanne to Riesling, balance is found and grace too. Yes, that was a The Hip reference…

The Screaming Frenzy series of wines were a hoot to gawk at as you sip, with the Pinot Noir especially noteworthy with its spice and depth while staying as nimble as a Pinot from the PNW should be …and the flying pigs helped seal the deal.

The Talking Stories wines made some wild claims and this value priced white and its red sister would be the talk of the room. BS abounds so you’ll have a hard time finding what grapes were pressed into battle… er, I mean, the bottle. But don’t take it too seriously, because these are wines you can relax with.
